Gustave Courbet     Stone Breakers

If we look closely at Courbet’s painting The Stone Breakers of 1849 (painted only one year after Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels wrote their influential pamphlet, The Communist Manifesto) the artist’s concern for the plight of the poor is evident. Here, two figures labor to break and remove stone from a road that is being built. In our age of powerful jackhammers and bulldozers, such work is reserved as punishment for chain-gangs.

Francois Millet  The Gleaners

Unlike Millet (figure 2), who was known for depicting idealized, hale and hearty rural folk, Courbet depicts figures who wear ripped and tattered clothing. None of Millet’s mythologized farm workers appear here. Courbet wants to show what is “real,” and so he has depicted a man that seems far too old and a boy that seems still too young for such back-breaking labors.

What are “Gleaners”? What are the three women in Millet’s painting doing?

What change in a law took place in rural France that caused Millet to paint this picture?

Edouard Manet was a member of the original impressionists in France. He painted many revolutionary works. Here are two of his paintings that shocked the world of art.

Manet, Luncheon on the Grass (Le Dejeuner sur l’herbe)

This painting shocked French society for many reasons. Find out why!

What ancient artwork and mythical story gave Manet the idea of the two guys with the nude woman?

Hint: Look carefully through my comments about the origins of Cezanne’s Bathers in my recent announcement on Module 4.

Olympia, 1856 by Edouard Manet

https://courses.lumenlearning.com/arthistory2-91/chapter/manetolympia/

Look back at the previous module to find two paintings that influenced Manet when he painted Olympia. Which paintings were they? How is Manet’s painting different than those two?

Auguste Rodin

What is a Burgher?

What event does this sculpture memorialize?

Why do these men have a noose around their necks?

Why is Rodin considered a realist, and a impressionist?

Claude Monet

This painting may have been the beginning of the Impressionist movement. Research the painting, and share with the class what you learn about the genesis of this type of painting.

Over 50 years later, Monet was painting his series of paintings of his water gardens outside Paris. Research his Waterlilies, and how they influenced abstract artists like Jackson Pollock, and Joan Mitchell.

Rouen Cathedral

Monet’s Cathedral paintings are just one of his “series” of paintings on the same subject. What are some of his other series. Insert some images of a series, and teach the class about the purpose of painting the same subject many times.

Paul Renoir

How is the palette ( types of colors ) found in Impressionist paintings different than a painter like Leonardo da Vinci?

Why did the Impressionists change their palette?

What technology allowed artists like Renoir to easily go outside to paint?

Share with the class who are the people in the Boating Party?
