Learning Objectives

  • Develop a resume
  • Tips for creating an effective resume

One of the most important (and practical) pieces of writing you learn to compose is your resume.  Your resume is a list of your qualifications that you present to potential employers so they can consider you for a position in their companies.

Resumes can be called Curricula Vitae (CV), precis, or vita, but they are all basically the same – a document that explains your background and skills as they pertain to an available position.

Resumes usually contain your contact information (including your e-mail, physical address, and phone number), your education, your previous work experience and any other information that you think will help you get an interview (like your volunteer activities, skills with software programs, other languages you know, awards, and/or publications).

Some resumes are submitted online in which case you fill simply fill out the forms provided.  However, other organizations may ask for a resume you develop.  This module is aimed at helping you develop a resume that will work for you.
