52 Sociological Personal Essay

Sociological Personal Essay Purpose:
For the personal essay assignment, we will learn about sociological concepts and practice critical thinking and inter-cultural appreciation by exploring a sociological concept (or two) in depth and relating it to our own experiences or ideas.

Assignment:  There are two different options for this assignment.

Option 1: Choose a sociological concept (or two related sociological concepts) and relate the concept(s) to your own experiences, the experiences of someone you know, or anything you have read or seen. How do your experiences (or an acquaintance’s experiences) relate to the sociological concept and show how it works? How does anything you have read or seen relate to the sociological concept and show how it works?

Option 2: Choose a sociological concept (or two related sociological concepts) and express your personal opinion on the sociological concept(s). What do you think about the sociological concept? What experiences or texts have led you to your opinion?

Purpose: For this essay, we will practice our critical thinking and our inter-cultural appreciation by analyzing a culture, subculture, or sub-community.

Assignment:

Choose a culture, subculture, or sub-community to focus on. This can be either a culture that you are a member of or a culture you want to learn more about. Your can choose few aspects of the culture, subculture, or sub-community to focus on. Please make sure to describe both material cultural aspects, like technology and tools, and symbolic cultural aspects, like values, norms, gestures and language.

This essay will require you to do research and cite sources. You will be required to cite a minimum of two sources in an APA format. The sociology textbook can count as one of your sources.

Your grade will reflect your understanding of the subject, and the use of sociological terminology and theories from your textbook.
